Heard lots of good things about Oku Restaurant in Kempinski Hotel, but I remained sceptical knowing how some Indonesian loves expensive brand new places without the real appreciation for the food. I admit that the interior is gallant, beige colored, spacey, none of those -elbowing other people while you taking your seat- kind of thing. They’ve taken the word ‘Zen’ seriously, with putting together the elements of water, air and plants into the decor. If you love art as much as I do, you’ll also appreciate the giant Mizuhiki birds. An ancient Japanese art form traditionally used to tie up Samurai’s hair, but now widely used to adorned greeting cards. Oku’s birds hangs over the pond in the middle of the room, ascending proudly into the sky.
What sets Oku apart from the other Japanese restaurants you asked? Well, first of all, their food are European and Asian fusion, in addition to the authentic Japanese selections.
The first one that I ordered was Green Salad (IDR 130.000): Mixed green with white Sesame dressing. Nothing really special about this except for the rich dressing and presentation. But I still enjoy it much.
Oku Karage (IDR 110.000): Soooo excited about this Chicken karage with Shichimi. Look at the dark alien looking dish served on black marble stone. Such a beautiful dish, and super addicting! Crunchy on the outside, spicy and juicy chicken thigh in the inside.
Karasumi (IDR 175.000): Angel hair pasta with Bottarga (cured fish roe) and Ikura ( fish eggs). Gorgeous looking pasta with strong Wasabi flavor, the rest was a bit bland for my taste but still a much appreciated dish.
Oku Aburi Roll (IDR 180.000): Tasmanian Salmon, Salmon Roe and Lump fish Caviar sushi. Tiny sushi with little rice in the middle. Excellent quality Salmon. Deliciously prepared.
Truffle Gyu Don (IDR 295.000): Black Truffle sauce, US Beef, Runny Onsen Egg served in hotpot. Love the generous truffle on top and the beef was velvety.
Black Sesame Ice Cream (IDR 70.000): Tokyo Monaka ice cream with thin wafer. So light and yummy.
Yuki Chocolate (IDR 120.000): Dark chocolate mousse, Yuzu cloud (Pomelo), and Hazelnut Praline. This dessert was gorgeous looking but mediocre in flavor.
Every plate in Oku is a thing of a beauty, very well executed and artfully design. So if you’re looking to splurge, Oku won’t dissapoint.
