As an Indonesian, I can’t deny the love of local food. Exploring food trend is also like a way of life for us Indonesian, the Nasi Liwet obsession has been circling around for a while and it can be spotted all over social media. Although the food is nothing new for us, the way they serve – eating right on the table only with banana leaves and without any cutlery – is what this trend is all about.
I visited this tiny restaurant in South Jakarta which is well known for ladies arisan gatherings, Gemoelai (meaning: Graceful like a dancer 💃🏻). Located next to a Batik clothes store, the eatery is very modest, nothing special on the look, but can fit around 50 people. If you want to try the Nasi Liwet you should probably make reservation in advance so they can prepare it beforehand.
FYI, the Nasi Liwet price as of today is IDR 140.000++ per person, which include drinks of your choice: Tea, Iced tea or water; Kerupuk/ crackers, Bakwan Jagung/ Corn cakes & Pudding for dessert.
I would recommend to try their specialty rice Lime Leaves Rice ( Nasi Daun Jeruk). The rice itself has many side dishes: Fried fresh water Fish (Ikan Mujair goreng), Fried Tofu and Tempeh (Soybean cake), Fried Chicken, Spicy Potato Chips (Kentang Balado), Squid with Petai /Bitter Beans ( Tumis Cumi Pete), Spicy Fried Beef (Empal), and Three kinds of condiments: Sambal Mangga (Mango Chili), Sambal Belimbing (Starfruit Chili) and Sambal Matah (Balinese chili with shallots).
The first thing that I tasted was the rice. It was bursting with flavor, fragrant, fluffy and good. The Fried fish was just okay, the Squid was nicely rubbery, very salty because it’s intended to be eaten with the rice, delicious Fried Chicken, the Empal was a little tough for my liking but pretty good flavor-wise. The Kentang Balado was sadly soggy.
Overall the food was just average although the experience was fun and memorable. Maybe you should judge it yourself sometime.
