Another new mall in Jakarta probably won’t spark my interest, but a restaurant with real live animals? You won’t have to ask me twice. Neo Soho is a shopping destination by Podomoro group. The mall itself is still kind of empty but looks promising with Central Department Store and many other tenants. Their most interesting one is -the soon to open- Jakarta Aquarium. As part of the aquarium is Pingoo restaurant. A themed eatery with Penguins as the main attraction. It helps to know that the penguins came from and being well taken care of by Taman Safari Indonesia. Their habitat is clean and fun plus the animals looks healthy and happy too. You can also feed the animals for free if you spend certain amount on the restaurant menu (there’s a minimum charge of IDR 150.000 per table). Otherwise they will charge you IDR 50.000 for the feeding. Remember to come early or make reservation before you come to avoid the long line.
If you are curious about the menu, they serve Western and Italian food here. Mostly familiar, comfort food and pretty much family and kid friendly too. The portion are large and the service was okay.
Chicken Caesar Salad (IDR 90.000/L): Large portion of crisp salad with creamy dressing, boiled egg, creamy dressing and garlic bread.
Cream of Mushroom (IDR 55.000): Really good creamy soup with thick real mushroom bits, garlic bread and a touch of truffle oil. Yum.
Spaghetti Vongole (IDR 85.000): Spaghetti with 500 gr of Vongole clams, tomato, dried chili and basil. The pasta was al dente but can’t really taste the wine in the sauce. The clams were also a bit bitter.
Fish and Chips (IDR 95.000): Fried Dori fish fillet with mushy peas, tartar sauce and french fries. Big portion, pretty good but wasn’t blown me away-fried fish. The french fries was tough and grainy.
Squid Ink Angel Hair Aglio Olio (IDR 85.000): Crab meat, green tomatoes, garlic oil, thin pasta. Strong flavor, the pasta was dry and just average tasting.
Mac and Cheese (IDR 80.000): Macaroni, shrimp, and cheese cream sauce. The dish was bold in flavor, overall it was okay but didn’t exactly fit the ‘mac and cheese’ description. It’s more like macaroni with carbonara sauce to me.
Pingoo Grill Seafood Platter (IDR 265.000/250gr): A dish of mixed grilled seafood ( prawn, crab, Tuna, Barramundi and squid) with your choice of sauce (Garlic Parsley Butter or Butter Spiced Cajun). I chose the latter. The Cajun sauce was flavorful, but in need of more fragrant. The seafood was cooked nicely and fresh.
Valrhona Chocolate Cake (IDR 75.000): Chocolate cake with Butterscotch ice cream. The cake was tender, with brownie-like texture and lovely tasty ice cream.
Finally, I must say that I had so much fun at Pingoo. Although the food was mediocre, the cute penguins stole the show and made it all worthwhile. Pingoo is a must try place especially for those with small kids.
