Tiong Bahru is one of my favourite destination in Singapore the last couple of years. The blend of traditional buildings and hipster cafe have been the main attraction for me. One the cafe that caught my curiosity was Plain Vanilla Bakery, which was well-known for its cupcake.
Plain Vanilla is located on Yong Siak Street close to other popular cafes such as Forty Hands, Open Door Policy, and Tiong Bahru Bakery. The building is quite small and it occupies only the first floor of the building. The decoration in front of the bakery is cute and attractive with pots of plants and mint green-coloured bicycles adorned the front pavements.
When I entered the bakery, I immediately fell in love with the Christmas decoration set up on the dessert table. It was so rustic and elegant. Definitely my kind of style. They have one huge square table and several smaller ones, and at the time was already fully-occupied by predominantly young ladies. I guess small cute bakery like this does captivate younger female markets.
Entering further, I found the counter to place the order showcasing many selections of cake, cupcake and desserts to choose from. On the right wall, they have shelves that offer housewares, candles, pillows, cookies and some other interesting stuff.
I have tried their cupcakes on other occasion and since the sweetness of cupcakes were not what I was looking for on this visit, I decided to order its Creme Brulee Tart and Flourless Chocolate Cake. Both selections were not disappointing. The cake was moist and had good density. I could not help emptying the plate, despite my fear of having too much sweet. The creme brulee was also top notch. Love it.
I would say that Plain Vanilla Bakery is truly a gem in Tiong Bahru that I have the great opportunity to visit and review. I would surely visit it again whenever I came by the area.
