I was always fascinated by the British tradition of High Tea/Afternoon Tea. Where in fact, each term has a different meaning, we often thinks it’s the same when High Tea actually have heavier dishes in lieu of dinner time in Britain, while Afternoon Tea is taken in the late afternoon before dinner. Any how, I think the regal and fancy way of an Afternoon tea is also makes it so popular around the world, including here in Jakarta. Today I put on my gloves and ‘tried’ to act like Lady Mary in a Downton Abbey scene, while visiting one of the most happening Afternoon Tea place in Senayan Area – The Peacock Lounge at Fairmont Hotel to be precise. The bright all white and pale green lounge looks so much different from the hotel’s minimalist lobby. I also like the cute White Rattan chairs they have here, a nice tropical touch to the feminine place. FYI, it’s better to make a reservation first due to the limited place, especially on the weekends.
I got right to the point and ordered their Pink High Tea Set (IDR 488.000++): It’s the only Tea Set they have in February besides the Oriental Set. This set includes Two TWG Teas/Coffees of your choice. While the mostly pink desserts were eye catching, you can’t beat the cuteness overload of the mini chest drawers! There are four stairs of desserts in there.
The Top part consisted of Macaroons, mini cakes, chocolates, Strawberry covered white chocolate, Raspberry cheesecake, shortbread and cookie on stick mostly comes in Heart-shape. I like the cheesecake most of all, because of the texture and taste. The cookies were also okay and the mousse-like cake was just average for me.
The First Drawer on top has Lemon Tea Cakes (if I’m not mistaken) and mini Fruit Tarts. The Lemon Tea cakes were really good. Delicate and moist in the inside. The fruit tart has rich pastry cream and crisp pie crust.
The Second Drawer has all of the savory sandwiches: Cucumber and Beet-kind of tasteless for me; Smoked Salmon- this one was my favorite. The Salmon was good seasoned well, the white bread was also superb absolutely scrummy! Foie Gras sandwiches-Pretty good although it wasn’t anything to brag about.
The Third Drawer is all Scones and Madeleines with Fruit jam, butter and cream. There were two kinds of scones: Savory and Sweet, both had nice consistency, warmly served, just alright for my taste. The Madeleines however were my least favorite. Too tough and wasn’t moist enough.
I was Godsmacked by the amount of this Tea Set for Two, because there were also additional fried savory snacks on the side. Enough for Four ladies to be precise, and the worst thing that you can’t take the left over home because of the hotel policy. Besides that the experience was pretty okay, wasn’t the best that I’ve ever had, but it was fun and if I may use the British slang: Tickety-boo!
