The second Japanese restaurant that I visited this week is Fujin Teppanyaki. If you like to dine around Senopati area, you’ve probably heard of this one. Brought to you by the people behind Rayjin Teppanyaki in Bali as well as Jakarta’s Pao Pao and Beer Garden; this one serves Hiroshima-style grill food. This place is perched in the corner of the Gunawarman Street, just before Torino restaurant. Although it is a teppanyaki style, there is only one row of flat surface grills in the middle of the room for the cooking. The rest are average seating arrangements. If you want to see the cook in action, you can seat at the bar table. The menu here is ala carte with the variant price range from IDR 85.000 to IDR 590.000 (for the teppanyaki). The service is quite fast and attentive too.

I was impressed by their welcoming gesture, with a form of lovely calligraphic personalized sign on each table – but of course nothing matters more than the food.

I went there with a bunch of my friends, so we ordered quite a lot, such as:
Wakame Salad (IDR 50.000): Fresh seaweed salad with sweet and sour dressing. Nice crisp veggies and lots of seaweed to indulge on.


Age Tofu Mentaiko Salad (IDR 60.000): Salad with Agedashi tofu topping and Mentaiko dressing. I like the combination, the fried tofu was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside.


Tuna Tataki (IDR 75.000): Panko (Japanese bread crumbs) coated tuna and avocado with Tataki dressing and mayonnaise.


Shrimp Gyoza (IDR 95.000-Large): The gyoza has thick skin, a little too thick for my liking, but the filing of shrimp and vegetables was tasty.


Assorted Mushroom Garlic Butter (IDR 65.000): Mix grilled Shimeji, Enoki, Shitake and Oyster mushroom in garlic butter. I love mushrooms and this one has plenty of it, the sauce was sweet, worked well with the dish.


Chicken Nanban (IDR 85.000): This Japanese dish was strongly evolved from the Portuguese, so it has European-Japanese fusion flavor. I particularly like the creamy sauce over the marinated chicken thigh.


Butterfish Misozuke (IDR 85.000): Grilled miso marinated gindara. Gorgeous plating. The fish was reasonably fresh, the sauce mostly taste like the other dishes, sweet based flavor.

Salmon Teriyaki (IDR 140.000): Salmon teriyaki served with grilled mix mushroom. Nicely executed, great sauce too.


Beef Yakiniku (IDR 95.000): Okay, this one is getting weird. I like sweet food but when the Yakiniku is also so sweet I got confused. It wasn’t horrible but I’m starting to feel like everything here tasted almost the same.


Fujin Hiroshimayaki Seafood (IDR 95.000): Japanese pancake mixed with udon and seafood. The pancake butter was delicious, the filling was enough to fill you up, but again the flavor mostly sweet.

Teppanyaki Garlic Rice (IDR 60.000-Large): Nice tasty and sweet fragrant fried rice.


Fujin Yaki Udon Seafood (IDR 70.000): Sweet tasting udon with shrimps. The udon was over cooked. Wasn’t my favorite.

If you ask me, the food here was so-so. The quality was good, but the taste wasn’t what I was expected. It might be just me, but the flavor was mostly flat out boring with the similar seasonings. Then again it’s quite a good bargain for a teppanyaki dish, so maybe you should go try it out yourself.😊
