During my latest visit to Plaza Senayan, I came by this whimsical retail store on level 2 that sells artisan bags, organizers, home accessories, books and stationeries. Tulisan was first established in January 2010 by the founding artist and CEO, Melissa Sunjaya, and opened their first store at Dharmawangsa Square, City Walk. The second store in Plaza Senayan was recently opened to provide more access to its unique products.
Its product lines are within the scope of lifestyle products that features original artist-illustrated prints. Tulisan distinquishes itself by Melissa’s playful use of symbolism and bold color selections that allow imperfection in her creative expression. Bags are the major part of the products sold here. The classic line is designed and illustrated with the storyline such as Love letters of Roro Mendut, Bawang Putih and the Night Sky, The Secret Garden of Admiral Kasarung and other stories from Indonesia’s history. Then there was also the fashion line which was illustrated using elements from the classic line.
Other products like cooking apron, dolls, stationery, cards, notebooks are all illustrated with Tulisan’s personal style.
One of its collector items which were produced in very limited quantity is Batavia Hotel. This is one of their products from the story line. They only produce 12 of these boxes of artisan goodies that were sold at a quite steep price of IDR 8,5 million. But for you who understand the value and the quality of these artisan creation, the price would not be an issue.
Tulisan is an example of Indonesian artist that through her passion of art has made it to the world. Its products has been exported to many countries. I am impressed and feel proud of our local artists’ works and achievement.
