My first visit on the Bangkok culinary trip was Somboon Seafood. Famous for it’s seafood, especially the Curry Crab, this 45 year old restaurant is always busy with tourists and locals alike. The big restaurant is a building by itself, enough for hundreds of people. The down side of the too famous eatery is that there are so many fake Somboons out there, and if you take a taxi to go there, chances are they’ll take you to the fake ones because the driver will get a commission from the proprietor for bringing you there. This happened to me on my last visit to Bangkok, and I’ve learned my lesson with paying double – almost triple the price of the real Somboon seafood, with less memorable experience. The menu at Somboon is a true seafood lover’s heaven plus authentic Thailand dishes to offer. For such ranges, great quality and price of the food, no wonder this place has a star of this country for decades.

Yum Woon Sen /Spicy Thai Glass Noodles Salad (140.00 THB) : Piquanted glass noodle with pork and shrimps. The acidity plus spiciness and all the right combinations made this an unforgetable dish.

Tom Yam Goong ( 300.00 THB ) : The sourness plus the savory and spicyness of the soup was perfectly harmonized, without a doubt one of the best Tom Yum Goong I’ve ever tasted.

Fried Curry Crab (1,200.00 THB) : Crabs cooked in sweet Thai curry mixed with eggs. The curry is actually more similar to Indonesian curry without the fragrant, tasted sweet and savory, perfectly blended with the sweetness from the crab meat itself. A most try and hard to forget dish.

  1. I have been visiting this branch of Somboon seafood every winter for more than 10 years now and have never been disappointed. You decide the size you want based on your guests and how many other dishes you might order and the whole crab is presented.
