Another hidden gem I found in Kampong Glam area of Singapore is this coffee shop that’s always crowded with visitors. I first visited Maison Ikkoku in 2013 and revisited it last December to fullfil my crave mainly for their brunch and coffee. If I had a list of top coffee shops in Singapore, and maybe I will in the near future, I would surely put Maison Ikkoku into the short prestigious list. :p
Like many coffee shops in the city, the space was a bit small with rectangular dimension and narrow facade. The interior was somewhat industrial with a mix of vintage knick knacks here and there. White bricks and gold plated pipes to cover the cabling for the lamps, adorned the walls of the right side of this coffee joint. The old tables on the ceiling reminded me of a tiny coffee shop in the CBD area of Melbourne, Brother Baba Budan, which ceiling embellished with vintage chairs and exposed cables and lamps.
With just two tables at the outdoor smoking section front side of the coffee shop, most patrons was seated inside with much more seating capacity. Just beware if you come during their peak hours, be prepared to make reservation first as I recall they do accept reservations. I had to make a deal to get a table, to be used for no more than 30 minutes, as it was already being reserved.
The espresso drinks here were offered in two blend options, which they call Noel’s Blend and 1942 with different taste and body characteristics. I ordered Cappuccino(S$10) for my espresso drink this time. As I mentioned earlier, they are quite renowned for their good coffee and I knew it to be true on the first sip. The acidity and citrusy flavour of the blend was tingling my coffee drinking appetite. A definite good coffee for my standard.
The New Signature Eggs Benedictt (S$22) – the eggs were poached properly as it should be. The egg yolk was runny when I cut it with my knife. Presentation was good with nicely burnt bed of bread. This is the only dish I ordered at the time due to time constraint.
These two other dishes were salad and a sandwich that I ordered on the previous visit and alas I forgot the name of these dishes. My bad. Anyhow, my belly was satisfied, that’s why I revisited the place.
