There’s nothing excites me more than eating at a celebrity chef’s restaurant, no matter what his/her origin is. Chef Degan Septoadji is a local celebrity chef that was made famous by being a jury on Master Chef Indonesia (season 2 and 3 to be exact). And he has built his own restaurant empire in Bali, Cafe Degan and here in Jakarta, Letter D cafe. I had- of course- higher expectation for this restaurant, in every single aspect, from the interior, ambiance, the menu and of course quality of the food and the taste. The building stands itself on the side if busy Ahmad Dahlan street. I love how simple, bright (with huge windows) and spacey the place is. The ambiance is relaxed, family friendly, with separated smoking (outdoor) and non-smoking area (indoor). It’s a nice place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The menu here is mostly Indonesian fusion. Smart unique menus that blends International with local cuisine. The other things that are excited to me are the many choices of homemade pastries they have, great to be paired with the famous Tanamera as their choice of coffee brand.
Salmon Lodeh (IDR 130.000): Slow-roasted Salmon fillet, eggplant, pumpkin, zucchini, chili, Galangal, in Coconut broth. I fell in love with this dish visually and taste wise. The salmon was fresh, cooked medium rare so you could really taste the beauty of it.The salmon was almost bland with so little seasonings, but perfectly harmonized with the strong creamy-frothy taste of the “sayur lodeh” or vegetables in coconut milk sauce-Javanese style.
Iga Sapi Bakar (IDR 260.000): 250g Charcoal grilled short ribs, chili soy, tomato, cucumber, lime and fried shallot. The Indonesian style barbeque beef ribs was tender, juicy, a little shy on the seasonings (for my taste anyways) but still mouth watering in every aspect.
Ciappino (IDR 120.000): Assorted seafood, Pasta Shell, tomato, onion, garlic, basil. This cute clam shell shaped pasta was authentic in Italian. Al dente, bold tasty sauce with delicious mixed seafood.
Citrus (IDR 50.000): Tangerine jelly, Pomelo, orange, oreo crumbs and Chocolate ice cream. I like the simple fruity jelly with the sour fruits, but wasn’t a fan of the chocolate ice cream that came with it. It just didn’t work for me.
Eton Mess (IDR 50.000): Vanilla ice cream, Meringue, strawberry and whipped cream. Fun to look dessert, too much whipped cream, not enough meringue.
Chocolate Pear (IDR 50.000): As a chocolate addict, this one hits the spot!
