If you go to Bali to seek culinary excitement, you might want to spare some time to get a taste of their local delicacies. One of them is Babi Guling, also known as Roast Suckling Pig. It is quite popular in Bali and there are a few babi guling destination such as Babi Guling Bu Oka, Pak Malen and Pak Dobiel. They are located in different areas. While Ibu Oka and Pak Malen are located in Ubud and Seminyak respectively, Pak Dobiel’s humble warung is located in Nusa Dua, in proximity to the Hotel rows of Nusa Dua beach.
Based on what I learned, to avoid disappointment, you need to come early in the morning or at least before noon to get good pork meat, as well as avoid running out of fried pork skin. They burnt the pork daily in the morning, and once they are out of pork to sell, they close the shop and it usually happens around 2-3 pm. So time management is of utmost importance 😉
Complete Balinese Nasi Babi Guling usually consists of fried pork skin, some white pork meat, pork satay, blood sausage, crispy innards and steamed mixed vegetables on top of special balinese rice. However, I avoided the internal organs due to health concerns, so I only had the pork meat and skin. It was quite an experience. If I could care less about my health, I think I could have finished two plates of nasi babi guling by myself. It’s that good.
Every babi guling cafe has its own special way to serve the dish. Even the sambal is completely different. Warung Pak Dobiel is smaller and simpler compared to Ibu Oka’s, however while a lot of people prefer Ibu Oka, some might agree with me that Pak Dobiel’s is a tad yummier than its similar competitors.
