Have’t been writing for sometime. Since I’ve been in Sydney for a few months now, the next few posts will be from my culinary trip in Sydney.
On my boxing day shopping time, I got a chance to visit Ippudo Sydney, which has just opened and is located on the upper floor of Westfield CBD Sydney. Since it has been quite a while from my last meal at Ippudo Singapore, Mandarin Gallery, I can’t help trying out its tonkotsu noodle dish again and also wondering on how Ippudo Sydney would look like.
When I got there, there’s quite a long queue but then again that area was insanely crowded during boxing day time. The modern Japanese interior style and some of the guest supplies such as the platings and the mugs are maintained for this outlet to create a strong corporate image for the Ippudo brand. They even keep the stack of red and white bowls and spoons on the shelves, and also the bar in the front for the waiting patrons who would like to sip a few drinks or snack on some bar snacks before enjoying their much awaited noodle. Only in my opinion, the atmosphere here is a tad more laid back.
Once we got a seat, we quickly ordered their noodle selection:
Shiromaru Motoaji ($15) – Ippudo original tonkotsu broth served with thin noodles, pork loin, cabbage, black mushroom & shallots. This is a classic hakata style ramen. When I ordered, the server asked for the toughness of the noodle..very soft, soft, normal, hard. I usually like my noodle a bit soft, but this time I tried the normal toughness. The tonkotsu broth and the noodle was cooked to perfection as usual. However, the pork loin was a bit tougher than I expected. Still, I would have to maintain Ippudo as one of my favourite hakata ramen joint.
Karaka Men ($17) – Ippudo original tonkotsu broth served with special spicy miso and ground pork. This would be a great choice for people who love spicy food. The taste of everything is not disappointing. But I would still go with shiromaru motoaji anytime.
So overall I had a good experience. Good ramen, a bit on the pricey end, but then again they’re located in an expensive place in CBD, with nice interior, good ambience and friendly staffs. I would probably come back again to try some of their other food.
