If you have to stand in line for an hour to get a cronut, would you do it? Well I did it for Dominique Ansel’s new restaurant that just opened at the Grove, LA. It was the first time I tried a DA’s joint and as you know, he was the inventor for the famous croissant/donut hybrid. This is his fourth bakery around the world after the NYC original, and two others in Japan. The line at 189 by Dominique Ansel was so long that it started across the bridge way over the restaurant. I know, it’s crazy but people do it for the experience and of course…the love of the food. It’s nice that in between they gave you cookie samples and tiny souvenir to brighten up the mood. Fun fact, the number 189 is actually the building number if the first DA bakery in NYC, and coincidentally the same number as the Grove,LA. So maybe it was all meant to be for the famous chef and his newest West Coast bakery.
The restaurant was pretty big with indoor and outdoor seating plus second floor for private dining. I went there alone so I couldn’t really order much ☹️ so here are the things that I can share with you guys today.
The Cronuts ($6.00): DA cronuts are sold limited, two per person. The shape was so pretty and perfectly decorated. Unlike Indonesian cronuts, this one has strawberry jam filling. A little too sweet for me and the pastry wasn’t as crunchy as I thought. DA cronuts tasted more like ordinary American donuts to me. Not too special but still something that’s amazingly memorable.
The DKA or the Dominique Kouign Amann ($5.50): This rounded pastry looks pretty boring but surprisingly fantastic! So light, crunchy, and buttery, this one has an unforgettable taste that blew me away. The caramelized flaky crust was so delicious, melted in my mouth and is a Must try!! I’m definitely Team DKA!
Chicken Spinach Salad ($12.00): It was lunch time and I ordered this salad that took half an hour to prepare 😑 The presentation was lovely, the chicken was nicely prepared. All good ingredients and everything from the dressing to the smashed pumpkin was well balanced.
There are so many things I haven’t got to try on my first visit to 189 by Dominique Ansel. I’ll be well prepared with my foodie army, the next time I’m there.
