I’ve heard about this 1 Michelin Star dim sum restaurant from Hong Kong for a while but I’ve never had the chance to try it when I was there. When I heard they have opened up a branch in Singapore, I was so excited since I don’t have to go all the way down to Hong Kong to get a taste of their supposedly wonderful dishes. Tim Ho Wan’s kitchen led by Chef Mak Kwai Pui has attracted many Singaporeans and gained its reputation as one of the best dim sum spot in town. I have the opportunity to witness it myself when I visited the restaurant at around 3.30 pm and had to wait in a pretty long queue.
The menu is quite simple and short compared to most chinese restaurants. I decided to order some of their popular dishes.
The obvious star on the menu is the infamous Baked Bun with BBQ Pork ($4.50 for 3pcs). The buns were crunchy on the outside and the pork was juicy and tasty on the inside. It was indeed a great dim sum dish. You definitely have to order this if you got a chance to visit Tim Ho Wan.
I also ordered Congee with Lean Pork, Century Egg & Salted Egg ($4.20 per bowl). Like a cantonese congee, it is soft and balanced. Another ‘Big 4 Heavenly Kings’ dish is The Steamed Egg Cake ($3.80) which they also called ‘ma lai gao’. It is a soft and a bit moist.
Since my usual order for dim sum always include Siew May, I went for the Steamed Pork Dumpling with Shrimp ($5.00 for 4pcs) and Deep Fried Beancurd Skin Roll with Shrimp ($5.50 for 3pcs). These must try dished did not fail to satisfy my appetite. It was greatly cooked.
After finishing our late lunch, it was clear to me what the hype is all about. Their dim sum are above the regular standards. If you are a dim sum lover, it is definitely a must visit restaurant for you.
