Straits Canteen – Darmawangsa Jakarta

Author: Posh Eater

Made famous in Singapore and Malaysia, we’re too are increasingly fond with Kopitiam style restaurants, here in Jakarta. But Straits Canteen offers more than that. It combines Singaporean snacks with our own (Indonesian) traditional meals such as Soto Betawi, Ketoprak, Beed Rendang Fried Rice, etc. Besides that you can also find traditional cakes and snacks.

With modernized Betawi (old Dutch-Jakarta style) interior, this new restaurant stood out in between Darmawangsa Square’s boring surroundings. The white furniture (and a swing chair) made me feel like home and brought me back to early my childhood. The newspaper-like menu have only a couple of pages, but they consisted of quite a lot of variety of menu.

To give you a picture of what this retaurant offers, here are the things that I ordered:

Nasi Rames Komplit: Traditional everyday Indonesian meal, consisted of Steamed rice, Kentang sambal udang petai (diced potato sauteed with shrimp and chili paste), Tauco, Kacang teri tempe (fried salted fish with nuts and soya bean cake), Kentang Goreng Sambal Manis (fried potato chips with chili paste), Sambal (chili sauce),and one choice of mains : Fried Chicken, Curry Chicken, Beef Rendang (Spicy coconut milk-marinated beef), or Gepuk (marinated sweet beef shanks) (IDR 35.000) Generous portion & incredible taste on everything on the plate.

Staits Mie Ayam (Chicken Noodle) (IDR 28.250):Chinese style noodle with your choice of fried/wonton soup. Perfect seasoning and good quality of ingredients.

Traditional Butter Kaya Toast (IDR 15.000): Not their strongest menu. Eventhough the butter and the Kaya (Custard Apple Jam) was good, the toast was too dry.

With nice settings, delicious homemade food and great price, Straits Canteen is the place to be.
