Soul Food – Kemang Jakarta

Author: Posh Eater

When I hear ‘Soul Food’,the first thing that came to mind was Southern American food, but this little eatery in Kemang provides Indonesian food instead. Soul food actually has a meaning of food that reminds you of home, so I guess this can also apply to any home cooking. The restaurant has two levels, with a seating arrangements of ‘lesehan’ or ‘tatami’-like seats and tables. The surroundings are colorful and cheerful with many wall decorations. The food are mostly ready to serve, much like any Indonesian home cooking style. This master behind Soul Food is Ananda “Nanduto” Putri, a cook, food stylish and restaurant entrepreneur, she is also well known for her packed home food products, like some of the ones that are available here. The food here is mostly Javanese food but also Indonesian Italian fusion food which is quite interesting.

Here are some dishes that I ordered today:

Kembulan Lunch Platter (IDR 175.000): Lunch menu for two people consisted of Nasi Cumi Item (Black squid ink rice), Ayam Gejrot Kecombrang (Tenderized chicken with Torch Ginger spices), Daging Suwir Kemangi (Lemon Basil beef),Tempe Abon Jambal (Soybean cake), Sayur Bengkel, Acar Nanas Kecombrang (Pickled Pineapple), Sambel Kedondong and Krupuk Barak. The portion was huge, two bowls of rice and lots of side dishes. I loveee the Squid ink rice, it’s fragrant and full of flavor. The side dishes were also delicious, there’s the salty chicken, savory tempe, and all kinds of mixed goodness from the duo sambals.

Bakso Dorokdok (IDR 35.000): Two kinds of noodles (egg and glass noodle) with two kinds of meatballs (fried and steam) in clear soup. The meatballs were just okay, I like the fried one better, the soup was light and nicely seasoned. Overall just an okay dish.

Aglio Olio Peda Ijo (IDR 45.000): Pasta with salted fish. This is a creative touch of Italian most known pasta, the fish was delicious but  the whole dish was a bit too salty for my taste.

I love Indonesian food and it’s true that good food is great for your soul. Soul food wasn’t perfect but definitely provides a straight forward and simple home cooking meal (plus a few extra fusion ones).
