“Had a slice of New York, Jewish-style, today”

I was quite a regular at Wild Honey, so when it closed down and moved to the spot next door, and the original location became Sacha and Sons, it piqued my interest. And later I discovered that Sacha and Sons is the sister of Wild Honey.

Finally I had a chance to try it. Since I was alone and couldn’t try too many at once, I had to choose wisely.

I tried the Corned Beef and Pastrami Hash with Fried Egg (S$18)

It’s so thoughtful of the waitress to inform me that the corned beef and pastrami comes with a side of Bagel and Cream Cheese. So I cancelled my additional order of that. It was like getting 2 portions for the price of one. smile

The corned beef and pastrami hash with fried egg was surprisingly better than it looked. It might be too oily for some, but it didn’t bother me at all, I devoured it with gusto and left the waitress a shiny plate to collect.

The bagel was satisfying, it was a chewy dough with a shiny crust, and the cream cheese was thick and rich in terms of flavor and texture. They were very generous with the cream cheese. You know what ? Because it’s supposed to be spread lavishly on the bagel!

For the coffee, they use coffee from the Common Man Coffee Roaster, a nugget of info I gathered from reading the menu. That excited me enough to order a cup of Roasted Almond Latte (S$7) and it was not disappointing at all.

My first visit left me longing, I couldn’t wait for the following week to come back. This time I managed to ‘drag’ hubby so we could have more varieties for our lunch. First we sampled their Pastrami Knishes (S$12). A hearty, savoury pastries (brought to New York more than 100 years ago by Jews) possessed an interesting  flavour, and a fluffy mashed potato filling was satisfying for me. But for some people the combination of strong Eastern European spices and peppercorns may not fit the bill.

They have 4 options for the Latkes and we tried their Smoked Salmon with Creme Fraiche (S$16) (FYI, Latkes are fried potato and onion cakes, traditionally served by Jews during their Hannukah festival). It was tender, amazingly smoked, perfectly flavoured and well balanced.

The dessert we tried was the Matzo Brei (Imagine a Pancake may be easier tongue). They have Sweet (S$10) and Savoury (S$12) option. So we chose the sweet one, with sugar and cinnamon on top, home made jam and sour cream on the side. Judging from the appearance, I should love it since cinnamon sugar is one of my favourite, but apparently the Sweet Matzo Brei failed to satisfy our buds.

Overall, I am pleased and amused by most of the food here, and I appreciate how they decorate the Deli, which makes you want to sit back, chit chat and relax all day. So I will come back for sure.
