Poulet – Singapore

When people say they come to Poulet only for their Poulet Roti or their Escargot….. I beg to differ, because I always come for their marvellous Truffle Mashed Potato.

Surely, most would come for the poulet…. I had the Poulet Roti with Mushroom Chardonnay Sauce (S$15.90/half chicken) too on my first visit. However, I find the cream and the mushroom sauce to be too sweet and too creamy to my liking. Although the chicken was OK, still I find it hard to agree with others who are absolutely in love with this item on the menu.

I like the French Onion Soup (S$5.90) which was not too overpowering in taste, and has the right thickness and consistency without being too filling.

The Oxtail De Bourguignon (S$15.90), where the oxtail was pressure-cooked in red wine sauce with carrot and onion, was a tad overcooked. Don’t try to compare the oxtail here with the oxtail soup (Sop Buntut) we usually have in Indonesia. Just don’t. laughing

I like their Smoked Duck Pissaladiere. Pissaladiere is like the French Answer to Pizza. smile  Unlike the crunchy, bread-like crust on Italian pizzas, this is closer to a tart crust. They come in 3 flavours, Mushroom, Smoked Duck, and Poulet (S$11.90-S$13.90).

The Escargot De Bourgogne (S$8.9) failed to impress me. I could taste the canned escargots, trying to disguise themselves in a powerful almond garlic butter and tomato fondue.

But the star in the house is their Truffle Mashed Potato (S$5.90). It ain’t the regular mashed potato you find in other places. It’s smooth, fragrant, hearty… totally my comfort food!

The dessert I have tried so far are their Tiramisu (S$7.90) which is my favourite. It is served in a jar, and topped with generous serving of cocoa powder. It’s wonderfully balanced between the moistness and the liquor.

It is followed with their Peach Clafoutis (S$7.90) which was a rustic French-baked dessert served with Peach and Vanilla Ice Cream, their Creme Brûlée (S$8.90) which was too sweet for my liking, and their  Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding (S$7.90) which was just so-so.

From my many visits to Poulet, I always go to the one at Great World City, and I once tried their outlet at Westgate. The first one at Great World City has an open space concept, enabling them to utilise the space to the max, making it appear less cramped. The Westgate outlet is slightly less open and darker. Both outlets have comfortable wooden tables and classic elegant chairs.

Why do I keep coming back to Poulet ? It’s because they served French food for a reasonable price,  and yeah… mainly because of the Truffle Mashed Potato. I have to admit it. 😀
