Chef Juna Rorimpandey is an Indonesian celebrity chef that’s well known for his appearances on Indonesian Master Chef and Hell’s Kitchen. If you are a diehard foodie, you might also remember his previous restaurant: Jack Rabbit. I still remember my good memories dining at that restaurant, so when I heard about Chef Juna’s newest venture, I was giddy with excitement. Correlate is located at Menara Rajawali, just beside E&O restaurant. This restaurant caught my interest from the get go. So much personalized details are put into this place, like the little words on the front door, which put the meaning behind the name, the touch of mint colors on the furniture besides the mostly natural wooden ones, the Japanese painted murals on the walls, to the custom leaves printed plates. All translations of Chef Juna’s passion for Japanese/Asian and International fusion cuisine. I can’t wait to try if the food also tells more stories to digest.
Here’s the food that I ordered:
Correlate Greens (IDR 67.000): Grapes, spiced pickled radish, citrus segments, cherry tomatoes, shaved Parmesan. Mixed vegetables with a little hint of sweetness in the Miso dressing. Refreshing and light salad.
Crab Cake (IDR 171.000): The look doesn’t do it justice, but the crab cake was scrumptious, lots of big chunks of fresh crab meat to indulge, with perfect tasting too.
Red Velvet Burger (IDR 149.000): Duo Cheddar cheese, Salanova green oak leaves, tomatoes, homemade Texas sauce, smoked paprika shoestring fries. A gorgeous burger with eye-catching soft fluffy Red buns, and thick, juicy beef patty and tasty cheese. Served with french fries. The only thing that was a bit off was the lack of seasoning on the meat.
Angel Hair Pasta (IDR 121.000): Angel hair pasta with squid and grilled prawn, creamy tomato sauce, fried basil and Grana Padano. The angel hair pasta was undeniably delicate, the creamy sauce was rich but works well with the simple seafood pieces. It’s a blend of Japanese and Italian that’s worth to try.
Matcha Almond Shortbread, Yuzu Chilboust and Nori ice cream (IDR 69.000): Gelatin rice pudding desserts with meringue sheets and Nori ice cream. Yup you got it right the first time – Nori/ seaweed flavored ice cream. A dessert for those who dare to try something different.
Brownie with 7 Deadly Sins of Chocolate (IDR 73.000): A blend of light and dense chocolate ring with melted caramel in the middle. With the addition of smooth, melt in your mouth chocolate pieces on the side. I couldn’t resist this chocolate heaven on plate!
Peanut Butter Cake (IDR 69.000): The sponge cake was a little dry, otherwise the chocolate covered bacon was addictive, the Butterscotch candies tasted like it’s Halloween everyday, and the Bourbon ice cream was smooth and creamy.
After my first visit to Correlate, I was quite impressed by this place, both the food and the vibe was full of surprises, which I didn’t get a lot from Jakarta’s new restaurants. I will say that Chef Juna still kept his mojo after all these years. I will continue to revisit this restaurant and looking forward to the Chef’s other astounding endeavor.
