Baker & Cook – Singapore

This artisan neighbourhood bakery, co-owned by New Zealand celebrity chef, Dean Brettschneider, is one of my favourite breakfast or brunch spot.

First time I came here, I tried their Eggs Benedict with crispy bacon (S$17). Ooohhh… it was love at first bite! The poached eggs was cooked right, laid on a crispy bacon with yummy hollandaise sauce. There’s also a hint of balsamic glaze and chilli oil. It’s perfect!

On another occasion I tried their Spanish Omelette (S$16) which looked and tasted like a regular American Breakfast Omelette, with the fillings of chorizo sausage, capsicums, onion and cheese. Later on I heard from my Spanish friend, that Spanish Omelette is actually consisted of egg and potato only, without sausage, capsicum nor cheese. Now I’m wondering if they are just being too creative. tongue

Since I’m a fan of carrot cakes, I usually sample carrot cake wherever I visit a new cafe. Therefore I also tried their Carrot Cake (S$5.20/slice). But sorry to say their carrot cake was not even close to my liking. It was merely sweet, including the cream cheese frosting. For me, the cream cheese should have the taste of tangy yet slightly rich flavour.

The Toasted Bagel with cream cheese (S$4.50) I had was just OK, I cannot say this is the best bagel in Singapore, especially after I had the one in Sacha and Sons.

The Almond Croissant (S$3.70) with the taste of the frangipane/the sweet almond filling was great… for those of you who prefer substantive-dense-croissant to crispy-airy soft interior-with thin flaky layers and a rich flavour of butter-one….(sssttt, the last one is so me tongue )

I always have their Mochaccino (S$5.50) whenever I come here and it never fails me. Their coffee is from Allpress Espresso, a New Zealand’s company that expand their market to Australia, UK, even Tokyo. Baker and Cook is the first one in Singapore that provides coffee from them.

Their two outlets are in the neighbourhood area, the first one is in Bukit Timah area, can be a challenge for non-Singapore residents, since there’s no MRT station nearby. I suggest to visit the second outlet in Holland Village area (Chip Bee Gardens). The place is much larger than the first one and it provides more seating capacity as well. If you seek for a quiet place to chill, try to come on weekday mornings, since it’s always full and crowded with the locals, expats, little kids, and also dogs during weekend mornings. I’ve never been to their third outlet which might be more convenient for some, since it is located in InterContinental, Bugis area.
